Stress can affect our entire body, but did you know our skin cells have the ability to release our stress hormones themselves? The skin is part of our hormone system, so when these hormones are being released and you find yourself in ‘fight of flight’ mode constantly, your skin reacts. Stress hormones are shown to directly influence excess oil production, making breakouts and blocked pores much more likely! Unfortunately, this can find us in a vicious cycle, life gets stressful, our skin reacts, we see it in the mirror and are more stressed as a result. Breaking this pattern can be tricky, but there’s a few things you can do to help calm your body and mind and ultimately, your skin.
- Exercise! Regular exercise lowers our bodies stress hormones and releases endorphins, which are chemicals that improve our mood. Exercise is also proven to help improve sleep quality which can be poor when experiencing high stress or anxiety.
- Some beneficial calming scents include lavender, rose and chamomile. Using scented candles or essential oils can help the feelings of stress and anxiety.
- Reduce your caffeine. Everyone’s sensitivity to caffeine is different, however, if you feel jittery or anxious after your morning coffee, it might be a good idea to consider cutting back.
If your noticing your skin is breaking out, or perhaps is more easily irritated then it used to be, it might be a good time to check in with yourself and see what factors could be at play. Small steps can play a big part in a healthy mind, body and skin!
